Innumerable stories about the sea monsters have scared us since many centuries. Many believed in these stories and its existence while some found it illusory, until carcasses of giant squid washed offshore and giant squid accidently hauled in by fishermen. These mysterious sea monsters caught the attention of scientists who studied them and found these creatures the most amazing ones.

To know more about them several search trips began from mid 1990 but only few got partial success to unravel the mystery of giant squids. Every team which led the expedition had only one thing is mind that is to capture giant squid in the camera in their natural habitat and learn more about their activities.

Japanese researchers in the year September 2004 managed to take some of the extraordinary images of 25 feet long (8 meters) giant squid from the depth of 2,950 feet (900 meters) in the North Pacific Ocean. They made use of cameras attached to the baited fishing line to attract giant squids.

They managed to snap more than 500 photographs and also recovered two tentacles which got severed from the giant squid in a bid to free itself.

Later in the year December, 2006 the Japanese Scientists got another link to their earlier discovery. This time they used a line baited with a small squid. They scored a coup as the russet colored giant squid hauled to the surface and gave an opportunity to shot videos.

The efforts of the team to bring it aboard turned out to be futile as the young female giant squid gave a tough fight and died due to the injuries sustained. But it opened new avenues and scope for the researchers to undertake such expeditions and study them in wild.
